âWell, itâs about time,â Lindsey grumbled as Deidre burst through the door. She picked up her purse and jacket and then stopped to stare. âWhat happened to you?â
Deidreâs eyes were red from crying. Between feeling like a failure with Sweet Deidre and the thought of Sabine and Kevin together, Deidre had needed to stop several times just to pull herself together. âBad day. Come on, letâs go . . .â
âWhoa, Nelly.â Lindsey planted her hands on her hips. âIâm not going anywhere with you in this condition. Come on, spill.â
Deidre glanced at the clock on the wall. âLindsey, weâre going to be late.â
âThen youâd better spill quickly.â
Deidre sniffed and pulled out a wadded-up tissue from her pocket. Lindseyâs nose wrinkled as she handed Deidre a fresh box of tissues. Deidre dabbed her eyes. âIâm going to sound petty and insecure, but I definitely think Sabine, Kevinâs ex, is after him.â
Lindsey wasnât impressed. âYeah, and?â
âAnd what? What else do you need?â
Lindsey gave a snort. âYou must have rocks in your head, Deidre McIntosh. Kevin Johnson is the catch of the centuryâof the millennium. Of course heâs going to have women after him. Sheesh!â She marched out the door, leaving a stunned Deidre trailing behind her.
âMaybe, but you donât know this woman,â Deidre said as they got into her car. âSheâs gorgeous, sexy, brilliant, and an old friend of the familyâs . . . Remember, they were once engaged.â
Lindsey just sat in the passenger seat and stared out the window.
Deidre continued, âNot only that, but she was recently quoted in the press as saying that she wished she hadnât let him go, and that she believes in second chances. And, right now, sheâs in Paris with Kevin.â
âDid he invite her?â
âNo. She was supposedly there on business, but I donât believe that. I think she intentionally timed her trip to be there with him. But thatâs not the point.â
âWell, what is the point? Surely you have better things to do with your time than worry about this. I know I have better things to do than listen to all this hoopla. This is worse than daytime TV.â Lindsey crossed her arms and looked at Deidre stoically. âNo offense.â
âWell, I guess you would know,â Deidre said, a little hurt. âBecause thatâs all you do these days. Watch TV and lament about how sorry your life is.â
âWell, then I guess Iâm in good company, arenât I?â
âLindsey, donât you think I have better things to do than have you attack me?â
Lindseyâs cheeks pinked and her nostrils flared. âExcuse me, but I sure as heck didnât ask you to come down here!â
âMaybe I shouldnât have! I havenât slept in days, I havenât had breakfast, and with the price of gasoline these days, I probably could have bought a first-class ticket to France by now!â Deidre was yelling now.
âWell, donât let me stop you!â Lindsey yelled back.
âItâs not you, itâs her!â Deidre wildly punched a couple of buttons and thrust her cell phone in Lindseyâs face. The screen was taken up completely by Sabineâs nearly naked image from a Maxim photo shoot.
